Honour Specialist Family Studies AQ (Queen’s, Fall 2016, Online)

September 26, 2016 to December 2, 2016

  • Category: AQ, Online
  • Region: Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario, GTA, Northern Ontario, Southern Ontario
  • Topic: Social Sciences and Humanities
  • Grades: Intermediate (grades 7-10), Senior (grades 11-12)

The underlying purpose of the Additional Qualification course Honour Specialist Family Studies is to focus on conceptualizing leadership. The course addresses the complexity involved in supervising the diversity of courses in the Social Science and Humanities curriculum. Mentoring is a theme that runs throughout the course as candidates consider ways to assist and support others in curriculum, pedagogy, inclusivity, assessment and evaluation, technology, and other key issues related to program planning and implementation.

In this Honour Specialist Family Studies course, candidates will explore leadership issues in various ways including independent reading and reflection. Candidates will work with colleagues in class and participate in tasks (including a course culminating activity) which are designed to synthesize learning from the course for application to teaching and leadership practice. The course is designed to promote strategies that support students’ conceptual development and enduring understandings in Social Science and Humanities.

This leadership course has been developed for teachers who already have a deep level of learning about subject content and pedagogy gained from practical teaching experience, professional reading and previous course work.  Please note that this course draws on teaching experience in secondary school classrooms.

Topics in this course include:

  • The Revised Social Science and Humanities Curriculum
  • Mentoring teachers new to Family Studies
  • Inclusive learning environments
  • Technology in the Family Studies classroom
  • Leadership responsibilities
  • Effective leadership skills
  • Working with and on teams
  • Professional development opportunities
