Senior Social Sciences ABQ (Queen’s, Winter 2025, Online)

January 20, 2025 to April 4, 2025

  • Category: ABQ, Online
  • Region: Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario, GTA, Northern Ontario, Outside Ontario, Southern Ontario
  • Topic: Social Sciences and Humanities
  • Grades: Senior (grades 11-12)

In the Additional Basic Qualification course, Senior Social Sciences, candidates will learn not only how to teach the three disciplines of Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology in order to meet the Ministry requirements, but how to do so in engaging and innovative ways. The course stresses flexibility, as often candidates will have considerable choice in meeting the requirements of an assignment. In addition, a premium is placed on creativity and innovation, critical thinking and reflection, and the development and fostering of a true community of learning.

Some of the topics covered in the course include:
– Similarities and differences among Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology;
– Practical strategies to implement the Ministry Guidelines in an engaging way to appeal to the senior high school student;
– Curriculum planning strategies such as the Backward Design Model and Marzano’s Nine Essential Strategies;
– Self and Others, including Socialization, Communication, and Perception;
– Social Structures and Institutions, such as the family, marriage, work, schools, etc;
– Social Organization, including bureaucracies, groups, conflict, discrimination, etc.
– Authentic assessment and evaluation, lesson planning, and unit design
