Description

Knowledge of foundational aspects of instruction in teaching Mathematics in the Senior Division; knowledge of the foundational aspects of secondary school programs and strategies for their effective implementation; identification of essential cognitive processes and concomitant instructional strategies; effective instructional and assessment strategies for the teaching and learning of Mathematics in the senior grades. Emphasis on curriculum development through design-down teaching and assessment methodologies, with a view to building differentiated instructional strategies into daily practice. Specifically, the course will focus on the teaching and learning of mathematics, with consideration for the needs of the senior division adolescent; the principles of learning as they apply specifically to the adolescent; strategies to develop a positive and productive classroom environment and building effective parent teacher communication for this age group will also be examined.

Prerequisites

  • Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Present an official transcript of a recognized university degree that shows a concentration of at least six one-term undergraduate university courses (18 cr.) or the equivalent in a subject.
  • Succeed in an English language competency test. Applicants who have successfully completed their basic teacher education in English are exempted from this examination.

Foundations

Introduction to teaching of the discipline at the senior division. Examine the impact of the particular discipline on the whole learner; individualized instruction; theoretical framework and pedagogical implications; examination and interpretation of relevant curriculum guidelines. Develop programs, analyze and apply specific teaching strategies and techniques unique to the discipline. Focus on evaluation procedures and techniques.
