This course will provide candidates with a means to actively engage students with basic dance foundations, through the study of fundamentals, dance philosophies and pedagogies. The focus is to incorporate rhythm, movement, and awareness of a broad spectrum of dance to facilitate student learning. Methods of student assessment and evaluation appropriate to dance are also explored.

Topics include:

• exploring basic techniques in one or more dance forms
• developing an awareness of movement skills appropriate for all levels of learners
• exploring methods for the creation and analysis of dance works
• exploring various technologies relevant to dance
• developing an awareness of a broad spectrum of dance
• developing an awareness of the cultural significance of world dance forms
• demonstrating knowledge of Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum policy
• developing an awareness of integration of dance into other areas of the curriculum
• developing an awareness of appropriate presentation skills for all levels of learners
• using, accommodating, and modifying expectations, strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental or special needs of students
• understanding, devising and employing a variety of assessment and evaluation instruments appropriate to the developmental stage of students and the delivery of the curriculum
• identifying factors in a diverse and changing society that impact on the student (e.g. media, technology, socio-economic status, family patterns, language, culture, gender)
