Family Studies, Part 1, provides candidates with a strong foundation and understanding of the underlying concepts of family studies, thought the engagement of professional learning to explore all that family studies has to offer. The curriculum includes family dynamics, parenting, developing healthy relationships, creating small group interaction; action research; presentations; independent inquiry; problem solving; collaborative learning and direct instruction all in a safe and educational classroom environment.  The purpose of this course is to learn about and understand the theory and practice and implementation of family studies courses and the creation of lessons that will provide students with skills for life.

Topics include:

  • applying the theoretical understanding necessary to implement and assess programs and/or practices related to Family Studies
  • becoming aware of a variety of appropriate resources, including technological and communication resources
  •  examining the context in which sensitive issues (for example, family violence, relationships, sexual orientation, discrimination, family stressors) may arise within a family studies classroom and how teachers address them
  • examining how Family Studies as a discipline enhances an awareness of  personal, community, cultural and societal responsibilities in a diverse and changing society
  •  understanding the importance of experiential learning within Family Studies
  • understanding the importance of safety in the implementation of Family Studies curriculum
