This course builds on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples: Understanding Traditional Teachings, Histories, Current Issues and Cultures, Part 1, further examining issues such as residential schools, as well as taking a more in-depth look at governance and nationhood as they pertain to FNMI peoples. The resilience of FNMI peoples and the current move towards self-government and nation-to-nation recognition and renewed identity will be explored. By the end of the course, candidates will understand the historic timelines of First Nations, Métis, an Inuit peoples, and be aware of current policies and documents that specifically affect their present situations.

This course will also focus on education for reconciliation: candidates will consider some of the practical aspects of reworking curriculum in order to achieve that goal. Candidates will be asked to think critically about the Indigenous content of resources available in schools today, and to demonstrate an understanding of how those resources might need to be reviewed and revised.
