OTF Connects: Holocaust Education in Grade 6: Supporting the New Social Studies Curriculum

December 5, 2023 to December 5, 2023

  • Category: Online, Webinar, Workshop
  • Region: Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario, GTA, Northern Ontario, Outside Ontario, Southern Ontario
  • Topic: Social Studies/History and Geography
  • Grades: Junior (grades 4-6)

This webinar will guide teachers through best practices in teaching about the Holocaust in Grade 6 Social Studies classrooms, including an exploration of the no-prep, high-quality resources available through Liberation75.org.

Cindy Kozierok is a Grade 6 classroom teacher in the Toronto District School Board, where she has been teaching for 30 years. She is also an educational consultant, specializing in Holocaust education in elementary public schools. This unique positioning allows Cindy to combine practical experience with the realities of classroom teaching and an advanced academic background in Holocaust scholarship and educational philosophy.
Cindy is a doctoral candidate in the William Davidson School at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, and she is certified by the Ontario College of Teachers with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Bachelor of Education in Primary/Junior/Intermediate and Special Education.
A child of Holocaust survivors, Cindy is dedicated to providing high-quality educational support for organizations involved in Jewish, Holocaust, and Antisemitism education. She is the Education Co-Chair for Liberation75 and the TDSB Jewish Heritage Committee, and provides consulting services to a variety of organizations such as the Ontario College of Teachers, the Toronto Holocaust Museum, Carrying Testimony, Holy Blossom Temple, and Beth Radom Congregation, where she also serves on the board of directors.

Marilyn Sinclair. A child of a Holocaust survivor, Marilyn founded Liberation75 in 2018 to organize the world’s largest event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of liberation from the Holocaust in 2020. With a mission to provide innovation and collaboration in Holocaust education, Liberation75 has educated more than 850,000 teachers and students across Canada. Liberation75’s survey of North American Teens and their attitudes about the Holocaust revealed that 1 in 3 students believed the “Holocaust was exaggerated or fabricated or they didn’t know if it happened at all”. This shocking realization was the catalyst that changed curriculum in Ontario and now BC.
Marilyn sits on the Boards of Steven Spielberg’s USC Shoah Foundation and Canadian Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Descendants (CJHSD) and is Past Chair of the Toronto Holocaust Museum. She was one of two Canadian representatives to the Claims Conference Board to ensure a “small measure of justice for Holocaust survivors.” In addition to a B.Sc. and MBA, she is a graduate of the Rotman School of Management for Jewish Communal Leadership program.
In her spare time, Marilyn is CEO of All About Words and Secretariat Central and was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Female Entrepreneurs.
