Activity centres were developed using a variety of activities in the Interactions cards. Activities complemented measurement and geometry strands.

Students are challenged to build structures in Minecraft to specific measurements.

Students are challenged to build structures in Minecraft to specific measurements.

In this measurement activity, students made a plasticine snake and measured it using interlocking cubes. They then made another snake that was one cube shorter and a third that was one cube longer. (From Interactions Cartes d'activité)

Shape Scavenger Hunt

As part of another math centre, students used the camera on the iPad and searched out a number of shapes (2D and 3D) from a specific list. Following this, the students then tried to get the other members in their group to guess what shapes they had taken pictures of by describing them only. It was a great way to have students recognize various shapes in nature and throughout the school. It was also a fun and interactive way to get the students engaged in meaningful conversation about math using appropriate vocabulary.

3D shapes

In one of the math centres, students were given the opportunity to construct a variety of 3D shapes using the building set we purchased through Scholastic. It was a fun hands-on activity that helped struggling students understand what vertices, edges and faces were.

Photos on iPads

As one centre, students worked in pairs to take photos of geometric shapes or solids around the classroom. They then presented them to their classmates. This was a great way to review vocabulary and generate meaningful discussions about what a specific shape or solid was.
