Kindergarten – Differentiated Learning Literacy Centres

This project focused on developing forty differentiated literacy centres for the kindergarten classroom so as to maximize the time spent each day on effective literacy instruction and practice.  Each centre offers three different ways for students to complete the activity based on their ability allowing each child to be successful and work independently without teacher assistance.  Each activity is printed on a different coloured card (yellow, orange, and red) which represents the level of the activity. All of the literacy centres we developed fall into one of the following categories; alphabet, phonics, rhyming, word families, sight words, dictionary, and sentences.

The variety of differentiated centres alleviates rote repetition and the possibility of boredom if there are only have 6-10 different literacy centres.  This variation also allows educators to integrate the literacy centres more fully within the overall classroom literacy program as it expands over the course of the year.
