The Additional Qualification course: Visual Arts, Part I is an introductory course. It focuses on the theory and practice underpinning visual arts education. This course explores the teaching of and learning about the concepts, curriculum, program delivery and connections between art theory and the production of art in its cultural contexts. Although this course will be of particular interest to those teachers who may wish to deepen their knowledge of visual arts education, all classroom teachers may wish to consider an integrated approach to cross-curricular teaching.

Topics include:

  • understanding functions of art and visual arts education, both for individual and for society
  • understanding various theories of perception, cognition, and creativity in teaching and learning in visual arts
  • understanding art as an expressive language
  • understanding the role of aesthetics, art criticism and art history as context for art objects
  • understanding design concepts
  • applying appropriate grade curriculum expectations while maintaining an awareness of individual patterns of artistic/creative growth, and individual student style
  • knowing how to modify and accommodate the needs of exceptional students
  • selecting appropriate examples of art for classrooms
  • understanding the role art can play in cross-curricular programming
  • enhancing student learning by using appropriate media, tools, and technologies
  • understanding the need for diverse approaches to teaching in visual arts
  • teaching students how to self-evaluate their plans for the production of art
  • using multiple methods of assessment, and a range of assessment strategies
  • learning how to talk about art
  • enhancing and advancing student learning by using appropriate technology
  • developing and applying age- and subject-appropriate assessment
  • assisting students in recognizing a variety of and alternative interpretations
  • understanding the value of the community as a resource for visual arts (e.g museums, art galleries, local architecture)
  • knowing a sampling of significant works of art in Western and non-Western cultures
  • knowing the chronology of distinctive styles and movements in art history
