AQ Guidance and Career Education, Part 1

Course Description:

Candidates in the Guidance and Career Education Part 1 course will examine introductory principles of school guidance and explore current school issues. Choices into Action policy is methodically explained alongside how to implement guidance education into the classroom to enhance the learning and understanding of others. Candidates will develop basic counseling, interpersonal and HR skills required for addressing the challenges of teaching in contemporary school settings.
Topics include:
·    Role of counselors and teachers in implementing the guidance and career education
·    Developing programs that address student interpersonal and career expectations found in the Ontario curriculum appropriate to student developmental and diverse backgrounds
·    Understanding career development and education theory
·    Investigating post-secondary education, training and destinations
·    understanding, within the guidance and career education context, education-related legislation, Ministry of Education, district school board and school policies and procedures related to issues such as Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC),  Individual Education Plan (IEP), Ontario Student Record (OSR) Ontario Student Transcript (OST),  Annual Education Plan
·    understanding legislation as related to co-operative education, community service and work environments
·    demonstrating knowledge of legal/ethical issues related to counseling, career education and workplace learning as they apply to both teacher and counselor
Requirements:

  •  Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions, i.e. Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior.
  • “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.

NOTE: Candidates who hold Technological Education qualifications but do not have any basic qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior divisions are  eligible to register for this course.

AQ Guidance and Career Education, Part 2

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to extend and apply the skills and knowledge gained in part 1. A greater emphasis on the career development process, delivery and career assessment methods of Guidance is explored.  Its focus is to build on what candidates have learned from Part I and to provide them with an in-depth exploration of the guidance program and its competencies.  Particular emphasis is placed on the teaching and counseling roles of guidance personnel.

Topics include:
·    Role of the guidance counselor in the Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) process
·    developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or an Annual Education Plan (AEP) for students
·    the Teacher Advisory Plan (TAP) and its current status
·    provincial and federal legislation related to cooperative education, community service and work
·    theoretical and applied counseling techniques
·    assessment and evaluation instruments and tools used for career development
·    the OSR and the OST
·    building  teachers’ capacities with regard to the implementation of Choices Into Action
·    working  with volunteers and parents

Requirements:

  • Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing successful completion of AQ Guidance and Career Education, Part 1.
  • “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.
  • Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer, confirming one year of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification.

* The Ontario College of Teachers defines “supervisory official” as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. (A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity). For a teacher employed by a private school, the “supervisory official” is the Ministry of Education official (e.g. Education Officer) appointed to provide supervisory services to the school.

AQ Guidance and Career Education, Specialist

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to extend and apply the skills from Part 1 and 2, with a focus on leadership role in designing, administering and evaluating Guidance programs.  It focuses on more of a comprehensive exploration of the Guidance program with an emphasis on the role of the Department Head.
Topics in this course include:
·    implementing guidance curriculum policy, including the Career Studies course
·    understanding of leadership within a guidance context
·    enhancing a repertoire of counseling techniques, group intervention and facilitation skills
·    developing a variety of student assessment and evaluation instruments appropriate to the developmental stage of students and the delivery of the guidance curriculum
·    implementing, through the Program Effectiveness Survey, guidance program evaluation to help the school improve its guidance program plan
·    demonstrating knowledge of legal and ethical issues and responsibilities related to guidance and counseling, career education and workplace learning (e.g. privacy act, freedom of information act, sexual abuse and harassment)
·    understanding changes in computer technology that facilitate the processing of student course selection, scheduling and record management  required by the OSR and the OST

Requirements:

  • Hold a “Certificate of Qualification”  showing successful completion of Guidance and Career Studies,Part 2.
  • “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.
  • Two years teaching experience (or 388 equivalent days) as verified on the Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer, confirming two years of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification. * The Ontario College of Teachers defines “supervisory official” as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. (A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity).

·       The Superintendent must also recognize on this Confirmation of Teaching Experience form that in one of these years, the candidate has demonstrated that significant program and instruction modifications in Guidance and Career Studies were explicitly planned, implemented and reviewed in the teacher’s class.
