The additional basic qualification course in mathematics is designed to enable teachers to gain knowledge and skills in the design, implementation and evaluation of intermediate mathematics programs. This course focuses on child development and adolescents, curricula contents, teaching methods and evaluation, learning theories, and the development and evaluation of programs. It focuses on the reconstruction of mathematical concepts in order to understand and analyze mathematical reasoning in the context of teaching and learning. Expectations and content are derived from the guidelines developed by The Ontario College of Teachers. The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession provide foundations to the approach followed in class. The course requires a minimum of 125 hours of work by the candidate.
