Teaching Students Who are Blind/Low Vision, Part 1 AQ (Western, Summer 2021, Online)

This introductory course will focus on the examination of issues related to the teaching of visually impaired students including the social, emotional and physical development. Special instructional strategies for visually impaired children will be included.

Prerequisites

  1. General Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) in Good Standing.
    (Our office will verify your OCT status and CQR via the online OCT Public Register.  You do not need to send a copy.)
  2. A qualification in one of the following: Primary division; Junior division; Intermediate division in a general education subject from Schedule A; or Senior division in a general education subject from Schedule A.
  3. Candidates can be admitted to the Part 1 course prior to obtaining braille certification; however, candidates must provide proof of successful completion of Unified English Braille (UEB) before the AQ can be recommended to the College of Teachers for certification.
  4. Accepted UEB certification for Part 1 AQ:
    1. Unified English Braille Levels 1 and 2, offered by Western – Certificate of Unified English Braille Competence.  Visit this page for more information and to register; or
    2. Equivalency to Western’s Unified English Braille Levels 1 and 2.  Visit this page and check the equivalency chart located in Admission Requirements listed for each Braille level; or
    3. Completion of Grade 2 Literary Braille Code or Contracted Braille PRIOR TO July 1, 2016 plus completion of a UEB update course.

*Teachers holding Qualifications in Technological Education may also take the three-part AQ courses in Teaching Students who are Blind.
