Dramatic Arts has been acknowledged as an official subject in the secondary schools of Ontario since 1970 and drama has been a mandated component of the elementary curriculum since 1974.

More than three decades later, the teaching of drama continues to provide young people in our province with the kind of hope which the DirectorGeneral of UNESCO referred to on the cusp of the new century. Now, more than ever, our students need opportunities to build the skills, knowledge and sensitivity that will enable them to fully participate in the civic and cultural life of Canada and the world. Drama is an excellent vehicle for this kind of inter-personal, socially relevant, creative learning.

Candidates will explore leadership issues in various ways including independent reading and reflection. Candidates will work with colleagues in the class and participate in projects including a course culminating activity which is designed to synthesize learning from the course for application to teaching practice. The course is designed to promote strategies that support students’ conceptual development and enduring understandings.

This leadership course has been developed for teachers who already have a deep level of learning about subject content and pedagogy gained from practical teaching experience, professional reading and previous course work.

Topics in this course include:

  • Useful resources to supplement your dramatic arts practice
  • Types of leadership styles, change theory, decision-making, team work and communication skills and management strategies
  • Current issues in dramatic arts education
  • Theories of student learning, inclusivity, diversity and creativity in dramatic arts students
  • Leadership in curriculum development, including curricula from different sources, curriculum design theory and considerations for assessment and evaluation in dramatic arts
  • Methods and strategies to enhance professional development for you and your team.
