Discover how Métis knowledge, harvesting practices, and innovation bring the Grades 4-8 Science and Technology curriculum to life. Educators will explore the Educator’s Guide for the Métis Harvesting, Science & Technology Video Series, developed by Métis teachers, and see how Métis harvesting practices—from fishing and trapping to transportation and clothing—demonstrate engineering, environmental stewardship, and real-world problem solving.

Participants will learn how to use the guide’s classroom-ready supports—including an English-Michif glossary, lesson plans, reflection tools, consolidation activities, and extension ideas—to help students explore STEM concepts such as sustainability, technology, biodiversity, and systems in action, while deepening their understanding of Métis culture and relationships with the land. While designed for Grades 4-8 Science educators, all teachers are welcome to join and discover ways to weave Métis perspectives and hands-on STEM learning into their classrooms.

This session introduced a comprehensive Science & Technology resource developed by the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) for Grades 4–8. The resource is designed to support educators in integrating Métis perspectives, land-based learning, and STEM curriculum expectations in meaningful and culturally respectful ways.

At its core, the resource explores how Métis harvesting practices—including fishing, hunting, trapping, transportation, clothing, and fire/wood use—have evolved over time through changing technologies.🔑 Key Themes and TakeawaysAuthentic Indigenous Perspectives

● All materials have been developed and vetted by Métis educators, citizens, and knowledge holders.● The resource emphasizes cultural appreciation over appropriation, ensuring respectful and accurate representation.
Curriculum Integration
● Directly aligned with the Ontario Science & Technology curriculum, particularly:
○ Relating Science & Technology to Our Changing World
● Supports cross-curricular connections and inquiry-based learning.
Flexible Classroom Use
● Six short videos (3–7 minutes each) can be used:
○ In any order○ Independently or together
● Teachers are encouraged to use professional judgment when selecting content based on student readiness.
Contemporary Métis Identity
● A key focus is avoiding the “historical-only” portrayal of Métis people.● The resource highlights that Métis communities are living, evolving, and actively engaged in land-based practices today.
Instructional Supports
● “Minds On” prompts to activate student thinking
● Lesson plans with:
○ Guided activities○ Reflection tools○ Choice-based assessment (e.g., podcasts, debates, design tasks)
● Extension activities, including connections to emerging technologies like AI
Hands-On Learning
● Optional Science & Technology kits provide tactile learning opportunities using accessible, low-cost materials.🎥 Video Series TopicsThe webinar highlighted the six-part video series:
1. Fishing2. Transportation3. Clothing4. Trapping5. Hunting6. Fire & Wood
Each video integrates scientific concepts, safety considerations, and cultural knowledge, presented through an intergenerational learning lens.📚 Access to ResourcesAll materials shared in the session are available online:
