In this course, you will focus on the skills and knowledge that prepare specialists for leadership. You will examine the possible role of the Lead Teacher in implementing the Expert Panel Reports Reading and the Technical Guides. As a leader at the divisional, school and district level you will explore: knowledge of current research and best practices in literacy development, current assessment strategies for the classroom, the place of children’s & adolescent literature in the program and school resource centre, cooperation with the teacher-librarian, the design of balanced school-wide literacy programs, literacy in content areas, and general literacy development. You will review current legal and ethical issues. Most importantly, you will review the skills required by those who provide leadership for other teachers in literacy development and the management of change.
