Supporting Social Studies Through Student Engagement

February 9, 2016 to December 5, 2025

  • Category: Online, Workshop
  • Region: Central Ontario, Eastern Ontario, GTA, Northern Ontario, Southern Ontario
  • Topic: Critical Thinking, Social Studies/History and Geography
  • Grades: Intermediate (grades 7-10), Junior (grades 4-6), Primary (grades 1-3)

New curriculum documents in elementary social studies have place a renewed emphasis on inquiry and and added focus on discipline based thinking. How can teachers adapt their practice to the new demands of the curriculum in a manner that supports student engagement and learning? Join colleagues for a practical exploration of the implication of the new curriculum for social studies classrooms. During the session participants will consider powerful ways for framing student learning around inquiry while building the supports they will need for success. A discussion around re-purposing existing materials to support the new foci in the curriculum will be included.

Presented by: Garfield Gini-Newman.
